By embracing the six proven tobacco-control strategies, put forth by the World Health Organization collectively known as MPOWER, Bloomberg Philanthropies’ has changed the landscape on global tobacco control. MPOWER is: monitoring tobacco use, promoting adoption of smoke-free policies to protect the public, offering to help the public quit smoking, warning about the dangers of tobacco, enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, and raising the price of tobacco through taxes. The initiative has helped fifty-nine countries pass laws or policies aimed at cutting tobacco use in places within those countries with the largest number of smokers and has saved nearly 35 million lives.

When they are implemented with the express purpose of reducing the number of people who smoke, tobacco taxes offer national governments an extremely effective policy tool for tackling negative health outcomes.
